FAMILY MEDICINE RURAL TRACK
Program Description
The Family Medicine Rural Track Residency at Larkin Community Hospital is the first ACGME-accredited program in the State of Florida to receive the ACGME Rural Track Program Designation. This three-year pathway is designed to train compassionate, adaptable, and community-focused physicians who are prepared to practice full-spectrum family medicine in rural and underserved areas.
Residents complete their first year of foundational training at Larkin Community Hospital in Miami, followed by two years of immersive training at Family Health Network, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Cortland, Upstate New York, through a collaborative partnership with LECOM’s Elmira Campus. This innovative structure combines the academic strength of a large teaching hospital with the continuity, adaptability, and leadership skills developed in a rural practice environment.
The Rural Track offers broad clinical exposure across inpatient and outpatient medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, emergency care, behavioral health, and pain management. Faculty dedicated to rural health guide residents in developing the resourcefulness and independence necessary to provide patient-centered care in resource-limited settings.
Rural Track Mission Statement
Our mission is to expand access to high-quality, patient-centered healthcare by preparing family physicians to serve rural and underserved communities. The program emphasizes continuity of care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a lifelong commitment to improving population health in areas of greatest need.
