Surgery Residency Program

The length of the general surgery residency program is five years, which includes an AOA-approved OGME-1R year. The program will provide clinical learning and experience in pre-operative, operative and post-operative care for patients. The surgical experience encompasses all scopes of general surgery, including skin and soft tissue; diseases of the head and neck, gastrointestinal tract, liver and spleen, pancreatobiliary tract, breast, abdominal wall, endocrine system, and vascular system; trauma and emergency surgery; surgical critical care; gynecological surgery; endoscopy; urological surgery; thoracic surgery and pediatric surgery. Appropriate full-time general surgical and specialty faculty is present to supervise and educate our residents. Outpatient clinical experience is gained at Larkin Community Hospital Outpatient facility, in addition to local clinics throughout Miami with emphasis on treatment of the under-served population.

Trauma and cardiothoracic surgery rotations will be completed at our affiliated hospital, Delray Medical Center. DMC is a 493-bed acute care hospital. It is a high volume trauma center and the only Level I trauma center in Palm Beach County. They perform hundreds of open heart surgeries annually as well as robotic-assisted thoracic surgery. While there, residents are in charge of managing the trauma intensive care unit and cardiothoracic intensive care unit. Pediatric Surgery rotations are completed at Miami Children’s Hospital. MCH is a world-renowned 289-bed hospital performing a broad range of pediatric surgeries. At MCH, residents are responsible for managing NICU, PICU, and trauma patients. Additional ambulatory surgical centers will be utilized throughout the residency at South Florida Surgery Center, Bayside Ambulatory Surgical Center, and Surgical Park.

Opportunities for research are highly encouraged throughout residency and easily made available to each resident by exposure to a variety of pathology, and access to medical literature is available through Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine Library.

Finally, Larkin Community Hospital is one of very few hospitals worldwide that offers the advantage of operating on fresh frozen cadavers. By utilizing Miami Anatomical Research Center (M.A.R.C.) for simulating surgical procedures before operating on patients, this allows the resident to gain a sense of comfort and knowledge about the surgical procedure that is only accomplished by actual exposure and use of the instruments to be used during the operations.
