What is PM&R?

The specialty of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) was developed after the World Wars and polio epidemic for the growing population of disabled and chronically ill individuals. PM&R, also known as physiatry, emphasizes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of individuals with physical disabilities. These disabilities may arise from conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system due to injury secondary to motor vehicle accidents, occupational, sports and other trauma. Additionally, physiatrists provide a non-surgical, whole person approach for medical conditions relating to acute/chronic pain, spinal cord Injury, brain injury and amputees. The primary goal of the physiatrist is to achieve maximum restoration of physical, psychosocial and vocational functioning by leading a team of medical professionals via a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach.

Outpatient and Inpatient Consultations are available at Larkin Community Hospital. Outpatient appointments can be arranged at Integrative Spine and Sports at (954) 564-3200.
